Women and Dignity Project

One of the greatest passions of Silver Highway is to recognize and celebrate the dignity of women. In an area of the country with the highest level of poverty, lowest level of economic mobility, and high levels of teenage pregnancy, drug addiction, domestic violence, and healthcare issues, new voices must emerge to pull us forward as a nation. A language for overcoming, for seeking dignity in the world we live in is more critical than ever.

The kind of beauty I want most is the hard-to-get kind that comes from within - strength, courage, dignity.
- Ruby Dee

Every girl and every woman, has the potential to make this world a better place, and that potential lies in the act of thinking higher thoughts and feeling deeper things. When women and girls, everywhere, begin to see themselves as more than inanimate objects; but as beautiful beings capable of deep feelings and high thoughts, this has the capacity to create change all around. The kind of change that is for the better.
- C. JoyBell C.

Silver Highway works to capture these qualities in women through image and story, and to share them to inform, inspire, and encourage . We believe that dignity shows the life force in women that gives them strength and passion, no matter the circumstances they live in. We are interested in showing the realities that women live in but we want to show the strength and hope that exists today. We want to celebrate the women who are in the struggle and the stories that make them who they are.

"Katie is a one of a kind artist and has been a blessing to collaborate with. She has helped me to brand myself through her photography, marketing guidance, and web design. Katie has a great way of showcasing the individuality of each client and brings about the best in them. Her clients can throw any ideas her way and she can give them that in return plus much more. Katie is also great at not just doing this work, but teaching you how to do it at the same time. She took time to teach me how web design works and how to maintain it once my website was completed. My website has gotten great feedback with people saying they have never seen a website that is so effective and professional, especially as I am an entrepreneur at the beginning of her career. Katie's photography can go from thought provoking and moving to gentle and nurturing. Her photography even helped me get published in Mantra Magazine, a worldwide yoga magazine. I am looking forward to much more collaboration with Katie." ~Leslie Ann Ellingburg, Yogini is a Dancer

Anawim Spaces (anawimspaces.com)

THE CLIENT

Talented home craftsman and contractor Bobby Whisman needed a website, logo, photography, and marketing content written for his company Anawim Spaces.

THE CHALLENGE

Bobby wanted to convey his commitment to work ethic and craftsmanship through the ancient Biblical artisans referenced in the Hebrew term “Anawim” (the faithful remnant). He wanted to set himself apart from other contractors who just come in and charge a high price and leave without considering the greater vision of the homeowner and how the sacred spaces of their homes and businesses will best help them to live their lives well. He needed marketing materials that told a story, and used imagery that showed context and meaning rather than just a business service.

THE SOLUTION

Silver Highway spent much time with Bobby and his wife Sarah trying to understand and illustrate their vision of Anawim Spaces. We created branding and an aesthetic that combined the ancient with the new, using imagery that showed Bobby’s passion for rustic, shaker designs and also his diverse skillset in working with more modern forms. We photographed many locations where his work had been used, and wrote his web content from the ground up, forming the narrative around Bobby’s extensive personal experience growing up around builders and then developing his own style and methods. We used “signature images” at the bottom of every page that helped give the site context and visual interest, and developed business cards, a logo, and other marketing materials that helped convey the immense talent and character of Anawim Spaces.

Robert J Norrell (robertjnorrell.com)

THE CLIENT
Award winning author and chaired faculty member at the University of Tennessee needed a website, social media presence, and several portraits for three books being published in 2015, as well as a place to promote his other books.

THE CHALLENGE
Fed up with some of the large fees taken by publishers, Norrell wanted to explore options for self-publishing. He also wanted to coordinate the promotional efforts of the release of his biography on Alex Haley in late 2015 with the A&E remake of "Roots (written by Haley)," the epic miniseries about an African-American slave and his descendants, which had a staggering audience of over 100 million viewers back in 1977.

THE SOLUTION
Silver Highway incorporated photography, web design, and social media outlets Facebook and Twitter to create an online home for Norrell with rich images, clean design and easy integration of social media into his website, so Dr. Norrell could update his news in moments from Twitter. We included streaming multimedia of his radio appearances and videos of lectures that he had presented. We included a blog and copies of his reviews that appeared in notable publications like the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the Atlanta Journal Constitution. As Dr. Norrell continues to publish books and articles in 2016, as well as being comissioned for speaking engagements all over the country, he is able to use his social media and online presence as the cornerstone of his marketing tools.

All Souls Church

THE CLIENT
Visible downtown Knoxville church in Market Square with a passion to seek justice and beauty in the city needed a website to represent their values and to help people get plugged in to the city.

THE CHALLENGE
All Souls needed an image that deviated from the normal church experience, as they sought to distinguish themselves from suburban churches who focused on overseas mission. All Souls also implemented a paperless communication policy, so online communication was critical to the success of the community, both internally and within the city that they sought to support.

THE SOLUTION
Silver Highway worked with All Souls church for over eight years and multiple generations of All Souls communication. They incorporated photography, web design, social media integration twitter and Flickr, podcasting, google calendars, and a rich weekly newsletter that had an open rate of twice the industry standard. Photos shot by Silver Highway staff of church interaction with the community appeared in the Knoxville News-Sentinel multiple times and went viral in national magazine, Christianity Today. The website included a user portal that allowed members to login and access a directory and minutes from elder meetings. Silver Highway worked with a communication team to develop monthly stories and images of the lives of congregants who were serving in the city. They also developed a photo installation in the prayer chapel in 4 Market Square that can be seen here. Since taking over the site in 2008, web traffic grew almost 400%, the open rate of email newsletters doubled, and online communication improved significantly. The website is now being handled internally, but you can see the original site here.
